Loch Lomond and Luss

On the 7th August 2020, my helper and I took a drive to Loch Lomond Shores and Luss only 1 hour 15 minutes from where I live and 45 minutes from Glasgow. It was a great drive up with lovely scenery after passing the busy city and towns.

Loch Lomond Shores is a tourist attraction which branches off Loch Lomond in Balloch. The Shores have great views overlooking out the loch and countryside. There is a range of indoors and outdoor water activities with shopping and eating facilities. If you are a shopaholic and like to spend money on the worlds top leading brands there is a Jenners, a House of Fraser store, Katherine Kinloch Pavers, Hawkshead, Thorntons, Loch Lomond Jewellers, Ponden Home Interiors Lead Labels, Grape Tree and The Edinburgh Woollen Mill.

Outside the retail shops there is the Loch Lomond SEA LIFE Aquarium which is great for the kids and enthusiast who enjoy learning about sea creatures. There is a hand full of cafés and restaurants on site which provides a selection of great food and drink to choose from: Thornton’s Café, Café Zest at Jenners and Queen of the Loch. The shores also hold food and drink festivals that take place annually and famers market every 1st Saturday and 3rd Sunday of the month, selling fresh local produce. I had a delicious burger from  Edenmill BBQ stall, it tasted amazing! Much better than a McDonalds burger.

After lunch I went to Luss 15 minutes north from Loch Lomond Shores. Luss village is a great for a stop off for tourists to admire the view of the landscape.  We parked at Luss Visitor Centre Car Park and took a walk to Coach House Coffee Shop to get a caffeine kick then sat a bench by the pier overlooking out to the loch and the picturesque surroundings. Unfortunately, the pier was closed off to the public due to the COVID – 19 to prevent large crowds.

Due to the change of weather I did not get a chance to experience a wheel along the  countryside definitely next time, typical Scottish weather.

Accessible Information and Facilities

Loch Lomond Shores – All of the shops at Loch Lomond Shores, are spacious and on the one level with steps free, bonus.

Disabled Toilets – You can’t go exploring without visiting the toilet first. The disabled toilets are located next to the main entrance of Jenners. There is plenty of space in toilet with handle bars for those who require them. They are well maintained and cleaned regularly. However, I was unable to turn on the tap and reach for the paper hand towels, who thought it would be a good idea to put the dispenser high up, had to ask for assistance. Please see photograph for evidence. There are disabled toilet facilities at Luss Visitors Centre Car Park.

Disabled Parking – At Loch Lomond Shores there is plenty of disabled parking which is well located not far from the amenities and shopping facilities. Disabled parking at Luss is limited, even though it a reasonable size located by the Visitor Centre. The ground at Luss car park has a lots of pot holes and parts of it are gravelly. This can cause difficulties with electric and manual wheelchair users.

Luss pier – Visitors have to walk along the road as there are no pavements to access the pier. Parts of the roads have pot holes and gravel some of it is smooth. The pier is wheelchair accessible, be careful try not to fall off the edge into the water.
