About Me

Hello and welcome to Richie Travel blog thank you for stopping by. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Richard I am 30 years old and from South Ayrshire, Scotland, oh almost forgot to mention that I have a medical condition called Osteogenesis Imperfecta also known as Brittle Bones type 3. This means my bones can break and fracture easily also a have sclerosis curve on the spine, but this does not stop me from having fun travelling around my own country Scotland and abroad. I am unable to walk therefore I have to use an electric wheelchair to help me get around doing daily routines. I like to share my life experience with people and add some witty sense of humour to break the ice put their minds at ease and let them know that I can speak freely.

When I was younger I travelled to numerous countries staying in various types of accommodations with my family during the school summer holidays. My mum enjoyed booking large family holidays and making sure the destinations were wheelchair accessible. Mum used to call them “once in a lifetime trips”. We have travelled to America, Australia, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Northern Ireland and England, not all at the same time. I will add information about them in future blogs.

My blogs will be from an electric wheelchair user perspective, providing information on accessible travel highlighting and reviewing how accessible places are as well as transport, accommodations, attractions, restaurants, cafes pubs, bars and amenities for disabled and non-disabled people. My ambition is to raise awareness and help lift up the barriers for disabled travellers. I hope my blogs will encourage and support people with disabilities to travel and explore the world.

Education and Employment

I have successfully passed my HNC and HND in Travel and Tourism at college. I am currently at university studying BA (Hons) in Tourism Management. During my years at college, I volunteered at Culzean Castle and Country Park as a Room Steward and Visitor Assistance which is a 35-minute drive from where I live. Throughout my time volunteering at Culzean Castle the main role of being a Room Steward I was situated in different rooms within the castle. My duties include dealing with the general public and tourists on a day-to-day basis providing information about the history of the castle and the amenities that it has to offer to give the visitor an enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, I do not volunteer anymore at Culzean Castle due health and safety reasons. From this, I decided to volunteer at Dundonald Castle which is a 10 minutes drive from where I live.

Throughout my time volunteering at Dundonald Castle my main role was a Castle Guide guiding visitors around the castle. My duties were dealing with the general public and tourists from all over the world providing them with the history of the castle and amenities that it has to offer also information on the local area making sure the visitors have a memorable experience. I will write a blog about Culzean Castle and Dundonald Castle. Once I had finished College I took a year out to work at a Call Centre as a Business Associate and moved over to work with the Brittle Bone Society as an Administrator Officer.
