Glencoe

The West Highlands

On the 14th of August 2020, myself, my helper and my mate with his helper took a road trip up to Glencoe, Ballachulish in the West Highlands 2 hours 5 minutes drive from Glasgow and 2 hours 32 minutes from where I live and the weather was amazing it reached 26˚C. Once we passed Glasgow and Dumbarton, we drove on the A82 road which is a stunning road to drive on with jaw dropping scenery and landscapes overlooking out to Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park all the way up to Glencoe. Most of the route is single track roads which are windy especially for larger vehicles. On the way up my helper and I stopped at Loch Tulla Viewpoint to look at the spectacular views of the loch and the landscape surroundings, please see cover photo. We were lucky to get a parking space at Loch Tulla and there is plenty of space for the wheelchair to move around, it was busy with tourists which was nice to see again.

I met up with my mate Sanjeev and his helper at the Glencoe National Trust for Scotland Visitors Centre. We sat at the picnic table around the back of the visitor centre to have a BBQ looking out at the stunning views. The footpaths to the picnic tables are uneven with rough ground, a lot of gravel and large stones in the way causing obstruction I had to ask my helper to kick a few stones out of the way to make the path less bumpy. My electric wheelchair got stuck when I slowed down and done some wheel spins. Therefore, I had to give it full speed ahead being extra cautious. It was definitely worth it in the end. When we arrived at the picnic tables the ground is smooth and plenty of room to move around looking at the mountains.

Glencoe is Visitor Centre, has recently been refurbished and it is the gateway to explore the magnificent mountain range, West Highlands and the eight Munros situated above the Glen. The Visitor Centre has an exhibition with information on the dark history of the Glencoe Massacre which took place in 1692 and wildlife, there is also a viewing platform where you experience a panoramic view of the mountains. The gift shop where you can purchase souvenirs, it is spacious with plenty of room and has a ramp for electric wheelchair users and other disabilities to access upstairs also the souvenirs are at eye level, I bought myself some books on the Battle Culloden.
